Domestic artificial intelligence (AI) experts are embarking on a new type of civil movement called ‘Introducing AI into civil society’ to expand the use of AI.

The AI Future Forum, composed of domestic AI experts, announced on the 3rd that it would join hands with the National Alliance for the Realization of a Proper Science and Technology Society (Kwasilyeon) to found the 'Kwasilyeon AI Future Forum' and engage in such an AI citizen movement.

In its founding statement, the forum said, “With the advent of the generative AI era triggered by ChatGPT, we plan to fulfill another calling and social responsibility of the times,” and added, “As Korea’s first science and technology civic organization, we are opening the door to the science and technology civic movement.” He said, “This is the new civic movement called ‘Introducing AI into Civil Society’ with the Korea Research Institute of Science and Technology.”

The ‘AI into civil society’ movement aims to spread AI to users. The forum pointed out that “all game changers in human history occurred not with the ‘producer invention’ itself, but with the ‘proliferation of users,’” and that “the global AI center of gravity is now rapidly shifting to generative AI, passing a major turning point in the proliferation of users.” did.

He continued, “Generative AI is already bringing about productivity innovation in every daily life and every workplace,” adding, “Depending on the definition and use of the problem, gaps in individual productivity are occurring, and the so-called ‘early adopters’ are more prolific.” “We are being given a great opportunity,” he emphasized.

“In the AI era, individuals are expected to become more powerful decision-making units than ever before with AI assistants and on-device AI,” he said. “In the future, user innovation will become more powerful than producer innovation. “We live in an era where individual productivity becomes competitiveness for the prosperity of companies and countries,” he explained.

The Forum mentioned Korea’s birth rate, which is the lowest in the world, and said, “What will we do to sustain, grow, and improve the quality of life over the next 15 years, when it is difficult to expect a reversal of population decline?” and “Utilizing individuals as valuable talents armed with high productivity.” “There seems to be no other way other than switching to ‘AI Korea,’” he said.

He continued, “AI literacy is a core skill for scientific citizens living in the AI era. “It is an era in which the AI literacy of individuals, companies, and countries becomes a capability,” he said. “If AI literacy is added to Korea’s technological capabilities, it will raise the AI capabilities of its citizens, making it the country with the greatest potential to become a global leader in the coming AI era.” “This interpretation is possible,” he emphasized.

The AI Future Forum, launched in March 2021, has decided to work with this fruit research institute and reorganize the existing 9-member co-chairman system into a 16-member chairperson committee. In order to strengthen citizens' AI literacy, the Gusuiyeon AI Future Forum plans to hold an 'AI Talk Concert with Citizens' every month and also hold regular local lectures.

In addition, the Institute of Science and Technology plans to establish a new AI Policy Research Institute (first director, Jeong-Woo Ha, concurrently co-representative of the Institute of Science and Technology) and establish and present systematic policy alternatives to strengthen citizens' AI literacy, focusing on science and technology, education, safety, diversity and inclusion.
